Canvas of Dreams
The village of Chamarel in northwest Mauritius is home to a magnificent waterfall and a stunning natural phenomenon – Seven Coloured Earths. Formed when layers of lava from the now-dormant volcanos cooled at different temperatures, the site is a melange of shades of red and blue. You can spend hours watching the light and shadows play tricks on your eyes. A walk up a steep muddy hillside nearby leads to a platform from where you can view the majestic Chamarel Waterfall.
Surrounded by warm azure waters, Mauritius is a dream come true for watersports enthusiasts. Get a different perspective of the island nation as you go parasailing at Grand Baie, Belle Mare, or Île aux Cerfs. Tamarin Bay offers some good surf between May and October, and if speed thrills you, you should definitely try the Sea Hover Adventure that ends with a delicious BBQ on Benitiers Island. But if none of this excites you, and you just want to do some sightseeing, go snorkelling or attempt the Solar Seawalk at Grand Bay.
SIGHT FOR SORE EYES
A favourite with locals and tourists alike, Trou aux Cerfs is an extinct volcano that overlooks the town of Curepipe. About 1,985 feet above sea level, the bowl is 100 m deep and a kilometre in circumference, and is surrounded by woods. The road along the rim is a favourite with walkers and hikers and offers spectacular 360-degree views of the coastal plains in the distance. Generally cooler than the rest of the island, it is a great place to just sit back and relax. Carry a picnic lunch and let the fresh air work its magic on you.
