FACILITIES: It was 42°C in Hyderabad the day I visited Park Hyatt Hyderabad’s award-winning spa at Banjara Hills. I had been baking in the Deccan sun, and now the kind people at the spa were trying a different method of cooking: they put me in a closed room at 43°C and steamed me. As the vents hissed out hot moisture, I pondered my situation deeply. What had I ever done? Fortunately, it turned out they knew what was good for me.
TREATMENTS: A brief while later, I had my feet bathed gently in rose water, and was persuaded to lie down on the massage table. What followed was a rare treat: a combination of two of the spa’s signature treatments in a package that is part of the hotel’s fourth anniversary celebrations.
The first part was a luxurious 60-minute scrub with walnut and crushed pearl powder to hydrate and cool the skin. I lay supine under Soso’s ministrations, trying hard not to fall asleep as my skin was polished with the warm, slick unguent. The spa takes great inspiration from Hyderabad’s Nizami traditions for its look as well as the treatments, and the next segment just blew me away.
THERAPIES: The ‘Four Hand Sync’ has two therapists working in tandem... They use long synchronised strokes over the body, in patterns that are as artistic as they are hedonistic. One hand barely leaves you before the other takes over. I tried to follow their intricate movements on my back, but soon gave up. Their deep friction movements hovered on the line between pleasure and pain; between grunts, I called blessings upon them for easing my stiff shoulders. The session ended with a long decadent soak in a mogra-and-rose crystal bath. I suspended thought and went with sensation.
